La Salle in Texas--A Multicultural Historical Reenactment

A TEKS Instructional Unit

LA SALLE IN TEXAS—A Multicultural Historical

Reenactment is a nine-day instructional unit produced by the Institute of Texan Cultures at UTSA for teachers of Texas history and American history. La Salle’s story is a grand adventure filled with disaster and mayhem brought to life as students assume the role of the French Tribunal of 1689. They interrogate the survivors of La Salle’s expedition to gather information and make recommendations about the funding of future expeditions. The instructional booklet for teachers includes the nine-day lesson plans and 20 survivor fact sheets about the calamities of the expedition, along with a timeline, a detailed roster of the people who took part, and a combined inventory of supplies and equipment. Teachers will find a wealth of new information culled from numerous primary sources about La Salle. Students will practice the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) of analyzing verbal information and interpreting disparate information to write a report while using the skills of open/closed questioning and learning about individuals and issues in European exploration of the land that become Texas. 53 pages.
